VS09 was my final studio production of university. Our adaptation was set in a 1950s/60s airport restaurant, controlled by the waiter Laurel's era and world. Meanwhile, our restaurant customers come from a modern era. As design assistant and props, I had the task of drawing these timeframes together through costume and set while setting a clear difference, to make the characters feel a bit out of place, like Laurel's observing and controlling their narrative.
I also worked with consumable props for this project, as our characters ate their ordered meals at the restaurant. This involved clear organisation from the start, from allergens and hygiene through to cooking and scheduling their delivery to stage. I really enjoyed the challenges of this show, working with such a small team came with its difficulties in the performances but allowed us to work closer together and develop precise tracks and teamwork to ensure a tight turn over between shows and a smooth run.
